This art card was created by Stefan Hagen & Sloane Tanen in 2004.

Can you see what these chicks are reading? That's right it's the October 27th, 1904 New York Herald announcing "Mayor McClellan to Drive First Subway Railroad Today from City Hall Station."

In 2004, the New York Subway reached its 100th anniversary. Since it first opened in 1904, New York’s subway has been the fastest and most popular mode of personal transportation in the city.

What's the Story Modeled after the Poster Program, the Art Card Program was initiated in 1999 by MTA Arts & Design. The Program provides opportunities for illustrators, print, and other visual artists to create evocative artwork for display within newer subway cars. Subway riders have the opportunity to enjoy colorful imagery as a source of thought and inspiration while traveling through the system.
