MTA Universe - MTA Arts & Design Art Card
Otto Steininger, MTA Universe, 2018
In Otto Steininger’s “MTA Universe,” the subway journeys through the galaxy, where subway line symbols form a planetary constellation. A close-up view inside the cars shows an astronaut as a passenger and at a distance, straphangers holding on to subway poles. Various space ships are destinations, such as Coney Island and the Empire State Building, all with the Manhattan skyline in the distance. Steininger takes the viewer on a fun-filled fantasy, with an imaginary futuristic view of the city.
Otto Steininger lives and works as a graphic designer, illustrator and animator. His work has appeared in several publications and has received numerous awards.

|What's the Story||Modeled after the Poster Program, the Art Card Program was initiated in 1999 by MTA Arts & Design. The Program provides opportunities for illustrators, print, and other visual artists to create evocative artwork for display within newer subway cars. Subway riders have the opportunity to enjoy colorful imagery as a source of thought and inspiration while traveling through the system.|
