This dense bedrock of Manhattan Island was once excavated using dynamite, picks and shovels to build the New York City subway, one of the largest and busiest transit systems in the world. For the new Second Avenue line an enormous Tunnel Boring Machine excavated nearly 3 miles of Schist, a piece of which you can now wear.

Schist: a coarse-grained metamorphic rock that consists of layers of different minerals.
