Taken from the book “Nonstop Metropolis,” the map below was created in 2016 by Rebecca Solnit alongside cartographer Molly Ray and researchers Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, Jonathan Tarleton, and Garnette Cadogan. Featured in our #NavigatingNY exhibition, the map is titled #CityofWomen. The artist states that the map pays “homage to some of the great and significant women of New York City in the places where they lived, worked, competed, went to school, danced, painted, wrote, rebelled, organized, philosophized, taught, and made names for themselves. It’s a map that reflects the remarkable history of charismatic women who have shaped New York City from the beginning.”
