While the names of accomplished men abound in New York City – Astor Place, Bleeker Street, Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, Washington Park, and Madison Avenue, to name a few – women of merit have been up until very recently almost wholly ignored or forgotten, and are seldom, if ever, attached to public works and infrastructure.
Thus, the timely City of Women map, currently on view in the New York Transit Museum’s Navigating New York exhibit and featured in Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas, has struck a chord.
With more than 80 new names added to represent each of the subway's 424 stations, City of Women 2.0 further celebrates and memorializes women who have shaped New York City from the very beginning.
