Walter E. Zullig, Jr.

A 1903 law prohibiting the use of steam locomotives in Manhattan became the catalyst that started the predecessor companies of the New York Central and New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroads on the path to electrification. Starting with that era, the book tells the story of the massive electrification projects of both railroads with special emphasis on the new Grand Central Terminal that opened in 1913 and continues to serve the public today. In addition to the NYC's electrification, the book explains the role of the New Haven RR and its electrification system. It brings the story up to date including the present day operation by the Metro-North RR and extension of the Harlem Line electrification from North White Plains to Southeast, north of Brewster.
