What's The Story

That familiar green railing at the top of a subway stairway is known as a k-rail, one of New York City’s most recognizable street-level transit icons. At the New York Transit Museum, our own k-rail entrance welcomes visitors into our home inside the former Court Street Station. Opened in 1936 and closed in 1946, the station reopened on July 4, 1976, as the New York City Transit Exhibition. What began as a temporary Bicentennial project became the New York Transit Museum we know today.
